What happened at this year's annual Vestry retreat?

Short Answer: A LOT!

Fr. Fred had appointed John Walker as Senior Warden, which was announced at the Annual Parish Meeting on Jan. 24.

At a special “Called Business Session” of the Vestry during our retreat the following elections took place:

* Steve Rock was elected Junior Warden

* Harry Jordan was elected to serve another year as Parish Treasurer

* Greg Bentz was elected to serve another year as Parish Chancellor

With the Rector, this creates our Executive Committee of the Vestry.

Summary of What Was Accomplished on the Retreat Weekend, February 5-7

* We shared perceptions of where the parish is right now – our challenges and opportunities that lie within the transition around and after our Rector’s retirement.

* We heard about the possibilities for celebration and new vision for our parish’s Second Century Celebration [Centennial Celebration and Fund].

* We received and affirmed the solid job done by our Strategic Planning Committee – pointing ways to a more effective parish life and service.  We reviewed the next phase of this process for 2010.

* We celebrated the achievements of all our commissions and assigned new Mandates for the commissions’ ongoing work in all areas of parish life for 2010.

* We welcomed the success of a revitalized youth ministry and the first phase of our parish roof replacement project.

* We affirmed and celebrated our stewardship success – which is now over-subscribed and assuring us of a balanced budget for 2010.

Special thanks to our hard working Vestry team and our Parish Staff who provide daily support and initiative in our work.

2013 Vestry Class

The Nominating Committee for the 2010 Vestry was commissioned in early October to receive nominees and present to the Vestry the initial slate of persons for election at our Annual Meeting (to be held on 24 January 2010).  The Nominating Committee was chaired by immediate past Sr. Warden, Al Stopperan.  Members of the Committee included: Rich Coulson, Gretchen Thum, Debbie Walker, Ward Cook, Blake Hodges.  The following persons were presented to the Vestry at its November meeting and unanimously approved:

Randy Bredar

Randy Bredar joined St. Andrew’s in 1992, when he and wife Julie moved to Kansas City.  Prior to joining St. Andrew’s, Julie and Randy were members of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas.  He has been involved in a broad range of youth activities at St. Andrew’s, including Guild of the Christ Child, Youth Group and Sunday school.  Randy has been very active in Cub and Boy Scouting, and for the past four years has served as Troop Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 16.

Outside of church, Randy is an architect and serves as Senior Vice President with JE Dunn Construction Company.  A native of Davenport, Iowa, he is a graduate of Iowa State University.

Randy and Julie Bredar have been married since 1983.  They have two children, Willy, an acolyte and sophomore at Rockhurst High School; and Hannah, a 7th grade student at St. Paul’s Episcopal Day School.  The family enjoys traveling and spending time together at the Lake of Ozarks.

Kevin Copeland

I’m an area native until graduating from MU school of business in 1981. I’ve worked in consumer products sales management postings in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and St. Louis with Union Carbide, Energizer and Monsanto. I was received into, married at and member of the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George in St. Louis. I returned to the Kansas City area in 2006 to assist ailing elderly parents who have both since passed. I own a start up internet e-tail business Chef and Kitchen with my wife Beth.  I’ve served as officer on several former and current neighborhood association boards. I am currently serving out a vacancy on the Vestry, on the Finance Commission, OSL, am a new LEM and a faithful attendee of Holy Happy Hour.

Brad Honnold

Brad Honnold and his wife Colleen were married at St. Andrew’s in 1994 and have attended our church for 15 years. Brad and Colleen have four sons: William, Grant, Walter and John Patrick. Brad has served as a Sunday school teacher for several years and has also served a prior term on the Vestry. Born and raised in Iowa, Brad obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Iowa. He is a lawyer with the firm of Goza & Honnold, LLC and his practice focuses on representing individuals and families in personal injury and wrongful death cases.  Brad is particularly interested in attracting families and young persons to St. Andrew’s and finding ways to keep teenagers and college students connected to our parish and the Church. Brad devotes much of his free time to coaching his sons and their friends in youth baseball, basketball and soccer.

Cathy Moseley

I’ve been married to Richard for over 31 years and we have two children and two grandchildren. I was a speech pathologist for over 25 years in both the Kansas City and Shawnee Mission School Districts. I have been a member of St. Andrews for well over 30 years, attended one of the early Cursillos, and was married at this church. I was a member of Altar Guild served as directress when my children were toddlers. Since my retirement, I’ve been able to become more involved at church. I went through the Lay Chaplain training program a couple of years ago, and currently volunteer at the Kansas City Community Kitchen, attend a weekly Precept bible class, and participate in Trinity Guild. Usually I attend the 8 am service, but I recently have enjoyed attending the Candlelight Communion service along with dinner and discussion. Besides church, I’m a weekly volunteer at City Union Mission in the High Impact Volunteer program tutoring adults who are working on their GED and helping children with homework who are in the after school program. My other areas of interest include taking weekly Spanish lessons and exercise classes, and taking my special buddies, Sandy and Cassie, to various dog parks around the city.

Lucy Shelton

When you meet people in the south, they always want to know where you're from and who your parents are, that kind of thing. So that's where I'll start.

I was born in Nashville, Tennessee and spent my earliest years in Sarasota, Florida. Most of my growing up years, though, were spent in Birmingham, Alabama. Summers were whiled away in south Mississippi with my mother's large and extended family. By God's grace, I was born into a loving and happy family. My father served during the Korean conflict, went to college on the GI Bill, and later owned a building materials business. My grandfather was a state championship winning football coach in Amite, Louisiana who went on to become an FBI agent when he was 30. His career at the FBI was devoted exclusively to civil rights and his job as an agent changed many lives, mine included. My parents, Bill and Evie, eagerly embraced desegregation during those painful and tumultuous years of civil rights marches and Bull Connor. Just forty-five when I was born, my grandparents were more like second parents. My sister and I spent every Friday night with them and especially liked it when Clarence and Ruby Kelly came over. Mr. Kelly, later director of the FBI and police chief in Kansas City, was the special agent in charge of the Birmingham office. They would talk for hours and my sister and I would sneak in from the den during commercial breaks from Gunsmoke and Bat Masterson to listen.

I graduated from college in Decatur, Georgia with a B.A. in biology and the school's fiction award. After graduation, I worked in solid tumor cancer research at Southern Research Institute in Birmingham. Soon there was an opportunity in the financial community and I took it. And am I ever glad that I did because it was through that work that I met John Shelton in 1983. We had a long distance courtship from Palo Alto to Birmingham and married in 1985.

Our greatest collaborations have been David (b.1989) and Peter (b. 1994). We moved to Kansas City in 1989 and into the open arms of John's mother, Ruth.

She welcomed me to Kansas City with a hand-painted sign on butcher paper strung over her garage that said "I Love Lucy" in bright pink letters, my favorite color. Her love of St. Andrew's and her ministry here is well documented in plaques around the church. While my most important work has been done at home, I have been active in the community all along. I volunteered in many roles at St. Paul's Episcopal Day School and at the Pembroke Hill School. I am a sustaining member of the Junior League of Kansas City and am active on the Academy Advisory Board at the Conservatory at UMKC. At St. Andrew's, I am a Lay Eucharistic Minister and serve with the Order of St. Luke. I also help on the acolyte scheduling committee and have taught Sunday School.

Favorites are Sunday nights at St. Andrew's and theatre of any kind, anytime and anywhere. I welcome the opportunity to serve on the Vestry and look forward to working with the Evangelism Commission.

Connie Smart

I have been a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for 65 years. I serve, or have served, on the following committees: Order of St. Luke, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, Usher, Gift Shoppe board and buyer, Trinity Guild member and past president, Past Vestry member and Jr. Warden (2 years), past member of the Endowment Committee, former employee at St. Andrew’s for 3-4 years where I implemented and was director of the Guild of the Christ Child under Rector Jeff Black, Co-chair of 75th Anniversary Committee with Bobbee Siemens, Honorary co-chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee (again with Bobbee Siemens!), and present member of Board of Directors at Bishop Spencer Place. I was baptized, confirmed and married at St. Andrew’s. My husband, Robert Smart, and I have two married sons. They, and their wives, are members of St. Andrew’s. My granddaughter, Ellie, serves as an acolyte.
