Benjamin Banneker Edible Schoolyard Garden

The garden creates an opportunity to teach students the value of planting, tending, harvesting, preparing, and eating food from their own backyard.

Hands on volunteers are needed- green thumbs are welcomed, but not required! Twice a week throughout the school year, volunteers present classes to six classrooms of enthusiastic first and second grade students- this presence is appreciated as they maintain a low student to teacher ratio for active learning

If regular volunteering is not something you can commit to, you are welcome to join us for seasonal projects and clean-up days.

Gordon Parks Elementary Charter School

The charter school provides strong year-round education within a safe environment for children in urban Kansas City, Missouri. The school provides hot breakfast and lunch, door-to-door transportation, maintains a 14:1 student-teacher ratio, supporting students so that they may focus on active learning. Students are exposed to a hands-on, project-based educational environment and spend many hours in the school’s STEAM lab. A team of counselors, special education teachers, a behavioral therapist and a family advocate work together to ensure that each student is receiving the support that they need.

If you are interested in supporting a one-time event, or giving one hour a week to read with, or mentor a student, please contact the coordinator.

Kansas City Community Gardens

Kansas City Community Gardens gives us an opportunity to contribute to accessible gardening for all Kansas Citians. This is a one-day group project, usually held in February, focused on packaging seeds to be sold at an affordable price. St. Andrew’s also financially contributes to the cost of buying seeds and operating the greenhouse where the seedlings are grown. Read more.

St. Augustin School and Church (Maniche, Haiti)

St. Augustin’s continues to thrive despite the challenges that the country has been facing. With your support, we have been able to provide funds for teachers’ salaries, lunches for the students, and other essential needs. Though the impact of the 2021 earthquake was devastating, St. Augustin’s was able to acquire temporary buildings and the necessary materials to begin the school year on time one of the only schools in the region to be able to do so. In the wake of unrest, natural disasters, and access to limited resources, the students have continued to show commitment to their academic work and perform well. In recent years, the 9th grade class was able to pass the national test with a 100% success rate!

St. Andrew’s members have made it possible to provide a hot meal for every student every school day through donations and two fundraising efforts:

  • The Haiti Advent Card Sale
  • The Haiti Benefit Dinner

We are proud to partner with Lucky 13 Pet Rescue, Rose Brooks Pet Shelter, Pet Resource Center, Uplift and Pawsperity to provide essentials to pets and the people who love them. Welcome House

Welcome House is a residential program for men who are seeking to reestablish their lives as they overcome alcohol and drug addiction. St. Andrew’s supports the Jump Start Program, which covers the cost for up to two weeks of rent, meals, and utilities while they look for employment and get their feet back under them. Many of these men have experienced life on the streets and look to this recovery community to receive guidance from those who have successfully overcome similar issues.
